Things to Consider When Securing Cargo to Your Car Roof Rack29 April 2021
Most accessories that are being integrated into cars and vans can help in terms of either expanding or organising cargo storage. And one of the accessories that can be very helpful in both expanding and organising the storage space of a vehicle is the roof rack.
Roof rack, as the name implies, is installed above the roof of the vehicle, granting vehicle owners additional storage spaces whenever they are transporting items, gears, and other valuables. This specific attachment is typically comprised of a set of sturdy bars that can effectively hold and carry luggage, bicycles, kayaks, skis, containers, and other bulky items.
Whenever securing cargo to your car roof rack, here are some things to consider so that it can be functional, safe, and effective.
Check the Load Limit
While roof rack can easily hold and carry bulky items, you must still consider the total weight of the cargo before proceeding with the loading procedure. The weight of your cargo must match the maximum weight your car can handle to avoid damaging it along the way. Fortunately, manufacturers of vehicles often determine the maximum weight that they can handle. They can likewise confirm the total weight their vehicle roofs can sustain before they start to generate some issues like bent roof part or broken sunroof.
Organise the Cargo
Once you know the load limit of your car, you can now proceed with the actual loading of bulky items. The way your items are stored on your roof rack can affect the aerodynamics of your car. Therefore, you must pack and organise them properly. Initially, you may want to place the smaller items in a tub or suitcase to prevent dropping them along the way. And then, you can now start loading your roof rack by placing heavy items on top of lighter items. They should stay centred between the doors to keep them balanced.
Use Straps or Cords
To secure your items properly, you need to acquire several tie-down cords, straps, and even ropes. Ropes, however, can only be utilised if you are familiar with knots that can truly secure your items. They can also work effectively if they are partnered with ratchet straps or cam straps, as these types of straps can stay tight even though outside forces and vibrations are prominent. Alternatively, you can use bungee cords together with other previously stated things in securing items on top of the roof.
Tie and Twist Properly
When securing items with straps or ropes, you must toss them over the items and pass them through your open windows. If you are, however, utilising tie-down straps, then you must twist them before passing them through your windows to reduce noise and lessen the force on the straps.
And then, you must tie them inside your car to make sure that the items will stay snug throughout the drive. Conduct at least two more passes over the item on all crucial sides before tying the straps or ropes inside your car. Securing the items at both lengthwise and widthwise ensures that the items will stay stable and secured even if you will be driving at high speeds.
